Loss of a parent
The loss of a parent can be extremely difficult, no matter what age they pass. We expect that they will pass, but the experience is still shocking and overwhelming. We often experience our friends, coworkers and even our relatives minimizing the experience of the loss of older adults. This sometimes creates more difficulties and it is often met with expectations to ‘move on’ rather quickly. There are expectations to continue your work, resume child responsibilities, and manage your home just as how it was before. Most people struggle with the emotions that come with the loss of their parents. They also struggle in other areas of their lives because of these cultural misconceptions. Our goal at our clinic is to work with you on restoring balance in your life. With a loss of this kind sometimes comes a re-evaluation of the self and the people that are in your life. This may come with a refocusing of life goals and examining personal priorities. Debera Umberson’s text, Death of a Parent: Transition to a New Adult Identity states, “the death of a parent is more confrontational than other deaths because children so strongly identify with parents that witnessing a parent’s death means witnessing the death of a part of oneself.” In our sessions, we work on helping you find peace with the questions you may have and how to go about accepting the changes in your life.
Session discussions may include:
How to manage with the psychological distress
Managing with the fundamental sense of loss
Managing with your physical health during this crisis
Understanding terminal illness and sudden death
How you are your remaining parent
